Why Roof Ventilation Matters
A well-ventilated roof performs two essential jobs. First, it keeps your loft cool in warm weather by allowing hot air to escape naturally — protecting your insulation and preventing the kind of heat build-up that can cause roof felt to crack and degrade prematurely. Second, and arguably more importantly in the UK climate, it removes moisture-laden air before it can condense on cold surfaces and cause mould, rot or structural damage.
Building Regulations (specifically Approved Document F) set minimum requirements for roof space ventilation, and many loft insulation guarantees will be voided if adequate ventilation is not in place. Whether you are considering a full re-roof in Telford or Shrewsbury or simply want to address a condensation problem, choosing the right type of roof vent is the essential first step.
1. Ridge Vents
A ridge vent runs the full length of the roof’s apex, replacing the solid ridge tile or capping with a purpose-made ventilated section. Because hot air naturally rises, the ridge is the most efficient exit point for warm, moisture-laden air in your loft space. Modern ridge vents are designed to be virtually invisible from street level, blending in with the surrounding ridge tiles.
Ridge vents work best as part of a balanced system — air needs somewhere to enter (typically at the eaves) as well as exit at the top. There are two common configurations: individual circular or slot vents cut into an existing soffit board, and fully ventilated soffit boards that replace solid boards entirely and allow airflow along their entire length. From a distance they look almost identical to a standard tile, making them an unobtrusive choice for heritage properties or areas where preserving the roof’s appearance matters.
They are typically installed in the lower third of the roof slope to allow warm air to escape as it rises toward the ridge. A well-specified tiled roof will have tile vents positioned at regular intervals to ensure even airflow across the whole loft space. 4. Box Vents (Static Vents / Roof Louvers)

Box vents contain no moving parts, require no power and need virtually no maintenance once fitted.

5. Wind-Driven Turbine Vents (Whirlybirds)

Even a light breeze causes the turbine to rotate, creating a negative pressure that pulls warm, moist air upwards and out. In completely still conditions they still allow passive convective ventilation through the open fins.
Turbine vents can shift considerably more air than a static tile vent of the same diameter, making them useful in loft spaces that have unusually high moisture loads — for example, above kitchens, utility rooms or bathrooms where steam can permeate upwards. They are more visible than tile vents and the rotating mechanism can wear over time in exposed locations, so they are best used selectively where their additional performance is genuinely needed rather than as a wholesale replacement for a balanced static system.
6. Eaves Ventilation Trays (Loft Insulation Baffles)
Strictly speaking, eaves trays are not vents themselves, but they are an essential component of any properly ventilated loft and worth including here. When insulation is laid between and over the joists at ceiling level, it can block the airflow path between the soffit vent and the interior of the loft — completely defeating the purpose of the vents you have just installed.
Eaves ventilation trays (also called insulation baffles or loft rolls) are rigid or semi-rigid channels placed between each rafter at the eaves before insulation is installed. They maintain a clear 50mm airway above the insulation, ensuring air can travel freely from the soffit inlet up and across the underside of the roof. 7. Gable End Vents
Gable end vents are fitted into the triangular section of wall at the end of a pitched roof — the gable — and provide ventilation at a high level without any penetration of the roof slope itself. Gable vents can be louvred, fixed or fitted with insect mesh, and they come in a wide range of styles to complement different brick and render finishes. 8. Hip-to-Ridge Ventilation Systems

Specialist hip-to-ridge ventilation systems address this by incorporating ventilated hip caps at the corners and a ventilated ridge unit at the top, creating a continuous airway across the entire roof structure.

9. Flat Roof Vents
Flat roofs require a different approach to ventilation because there is no slope to drive natural convective airflow. Flat roof ventilators — sometimes called mushroom vents or dome vents — are low-profile domed units fitted through the roof membrane that allow trapped moisture and warm air to escape from the zone between the membrane and the decking below.
Cold-deck flat roofs (where insulation sits above the deck and below the membrane) are particularly prone to interstitial condensation, and ventilated systems or a switch to a warm-deck or inverted flat roof construction can resolve long-standing damp problems.
