Leadwork & Flashing

Leadwork and Lead Flashing Repairs in Shropshire

Lead flashing seals the joints where your roof meets something else – a chimney, a wall, a roof window, or the valley between two roof slopes. These joints are where most roof leaks start. When flashing lifts, cracks or comes away from the brickwork, water runs straight into the roof space, often appearing as a damp patch some distance away from the actual fault. Severnside Roofing repairs, renews and installs leadwork on homes, churches and commercial buildings across Telford, Shrewsbury and Shropshire. Brick chimney stack with lead flashing on a roof

Our Leadwork Services

Chimney Flashing

Chimneys need several pieces of lead working together: step flashing down the sides, a front apron and a back gutter behind the stack. If any part fails, water gets in. We repair and renew chimney leadwork and can carry out wider chimney repairs at the same time, such as repointing and new flaunching.

Abutment Flashing

Where a roof meets a wall – on extensions, porches, lean-tos and terraced houses – a lead flashing or cover flashing keeps water out of the joint. We replace failed flashings and re-point them securely into the brickwork.

Lead Valleys

Valleys carry large volumes of water from two roof slopes. Old valleys can split, wear thin or become blocked with debris. We strip and renew lead valleys, including the boarding beneath where needed.

Roof Windows and Rooflights

Poorly flashed roof windows are a common source of leaks. We repair and replace flashings around rooflights and Velux windows.

Bays, Dormers and Small Lead Roofs

We cover and repair lead roofs on bay windows, dormers, canopies and porches, and dress lead neatly around complex details.

Repointing Flashings

Often the lead itself is sound but the mortar holding it into the wall has failed. We rake out and re-point flashings to make them watertight again. See brickwork repointing. Roof window fitted into a tiled roof with flashing

Signs Your Flashing Needs Repair

  • Damp patches on ceilings or chimney breasts, especially after heavy or wind-driven rain
  • Lead visibly lifted, cracked, split or missing (check from the ground with binoculars)
  • Mortar missing where the flashing meets the brickwork
  • Water stains or damp timbers in the loft around the chimney or a valley
  • Drips around roof windows
Our guide on how to repair roof flashing explains the common problems in more detail. If you’ve already got a leak, see how to tell if you have a roof leak.

Done Properly, Built to Last

Well-installed leadwork can last for decades. The key is using the correct thickness of lead for each job, keeping individual pieces to the right size so they can expand and contract, and fixing them securely without over-restraining them. We follow good practice on all of these, so your flashings stay watertight through Shropshire winters.

Leadwork as Part of a Bigger Job

Leadwork is usually renewed as part of a re-roof or major roof repair, and it’s often the most cost-effective time to do it while access is in place. If storm winds have lifted your flashing, see our storm damage roof repairs service.
