Roof Moss Removal & Cleaning

Roof Moss Removal & Cleaning

Roof Moss Removal and Cleaning in Shropshire

Moss thrives on Shropshire roofs, especially on north-facing slopes, shaded roofs and homes surrounded by trees. A light covering is mostly cosmetic, but thick moss holds water against your tiles, lifts them at the edges, blocks gutters and downpipes, and can lead to leaks and frost damage over winter. Severnside Roofing removes moss safely by hand, clears the debris from your gutters, and checks your roof for damage while we’re up there. Thick moss growing on roof tiles and in a gutter

Why Moss Is a Problem for Your Roof

  • It holds moisture. Moss acts like a sponge, keeping tiles wet for long periods. In freezing weather that water expands and can crack or flake tiles.
  • It lifts tiles. As moss builds up under the edges and overlaps of tiles, it can lift them and let wind-driven rain get underneath.
  • It blocks gutters. Moss washes off in heavy rain and collects in gutters and downpipes, causing overflows and damp walls.
  • It hides damage. Thick moss can cover cracked or slipped tiles, so problems go unnoticed until they leak.

What Our Moss Removal Includes

  1. Safe access using appropriate ladders, roof ladders or access equipment.
  2. Careful hand removal of moss from tiles and slates using scrapers and brushes, without damaging the roof surface.
  3. Gutter and downpipe clearing to remove all moss and debris that has collected.
  4. Roof check of tiles, ridges, flashing and chimneys while we’re on the roof, with photos of anything that needs attention.
  5. Optional treatment to help slow regrowth – ask us about this when you book.
  6. Clean-up of paths, drives and garden areas below.

Why We Don’t Jet-Wash Most Roofs

High-pressure jet washing can strip the surface from concrete tiles, damage older clay tiles and slates, and drive water up under the tiles into the roof space. For most domestic roofs, careful manual removal is the safer option and gives a better long-term result. Clean clay tiled roof

When Is the Best Time to Remove Moss?

Moss is easiest to remove in dry spells, and autumn is a good time to tackle it before winter weather sets in. Read our guides on the best time of year to remove moss from your roof and how to stop moss growing on your roof. Our autumn roof checklist has more seasonal advice.

Moss Can Hide Bigger Problems

If we find damage under the moss, we’ll explain what needs doing and give you a separate quote for any roof repairs before starting. If gutters or fascias are damaged, see our fascias, soffits and guttering service. If your tiles are porous and crumbling, it may be time to consider re-tiling – read the signs that you need a new roof.

Flat Roofs and Moss

Moss and algae on flat roofs often point to standing water. If your flat roof is holding puddles, see our flat roofing services – a modern EPDM or GRP roof may be the long-term fix.
