Meet the Team: Q&A with an Apprentice Roofer

At Severnside Roofing, we’re proud to run our own apprenticeship programme — training the next generation of skilled roofers right here in Shropshire. We sat down with Jayden Boateng, one of our current roofing apprentices, to find out what it’s really like to start a career in roofing, what a typical day looks like, and what advice he’d give to anyone thinking about following the same path.

How long have you been with Severnside, and how did you get started?

“I joined the apprenticeship about six months ago. I wanted a trade where I could learn on the job rather than sit in a classroom all day, and roofing seemed like something with real variety — no two jobs are quite the same. Severnside’s apprenticeship programme meant I could start learning properly from day one, working alongside people who’ve been doing this for years.”

What does a typical day on site look like for you?

“It really depends on the job. Some days I’m helping out on a full re-roof, other days it might be a smaller repair or working on a flat roof extension. Early on, a lot of it was about learning how to work safely at height and understanding the tools and materials, but I’m getting more hands-on with actual roofing work all the time.”

What’s been the biggest thing you’ve learned so far?

“Honestly, patience and attention to detail. Roofing looks straightforward from the ground, but getting things like flashing and tile alignment right takes real precision. The lads have been really good at showing me the small details that make the difference between an average job and a proper, long-lasting one.”

What’s the best part of the job?

“Seeing a job finished, definitely. You go from a roof that’s damaged or in bad shape to something that looks brand new and is going to protect someone’s home for years. There’s something satisfying about that, especially when you’ve had a hand in it yourself.”

What would you say to someone thinking about a roofing apprenticeship?

“Go for it, but be ready to work hard. It’s physical, and you’re outdoors in all weather, so it’s not for everyone. But if you like learning a proper trade and want a job where you can see real results from your work, it’s a great way in. Everyone at Severnside has been really supportive, and I’m learning something new pretty much every week.”
